The Importance of Leash Training Your Dog

Leash training isn’t something a lot of us dog owners give much thought to. A dog is a dog and a dog walks on the leash. It comes naturally to us, so it must come naturally to them, right?

Unfortunately, that isn’t always the case. Some dogs never experience the leash as puppies, and therefore they are terrified when someone tries to put one on them as an adult. They don’t know what this thing tugging at their neck is or what it means.

This was the case with a dog named King I recently worked with. As a young dog, King’s owner just let him run out the back door to do his business. When his owners tried to put a leash on him later, he refused to leave the backyard or even go through the front door. We even tried using a harness instead of a collar, but he still wouldn’t budge.

So we started slow. We gave him time to get used to the leash inside the home instead of forcing him to go outside. After some time, King’s anxiety began to abate, and we were able to move outside of the home. This is a major perk of our commitment based training philosophy–even if your dog isn’t moving at a quick pace and requires more sessions than most dogs, you don’t have to worry about any extra cost to you.

Thanks to the program and his owner’s commitment, King no longer cowers or tucks his tail between his legs at the sight of a leash.
