Causes for Aggression

There are several causes of canine aggression and several ways to deal with canine aggression (that do not involve surrendering or euthanizing your pet). Some people don’t have a lot of faith in training to solve aggression because they assume that type of behavior is simply a part of the dog’s personality. However, it’s usually more complex an issue than that. Aggression is a behavioral problem, and training works to modify behavior.

Pain can cause many dogs to act out in an aggressive manner, and some problems like arthritis can go undetected for a while. Check with a vet first, and if he/she gives your dog a clean bill of health, it’s time to get an in-home trainer involved.

Anxiety, fear, possessiveness, overprotectiveness, and the instinctive will to dominate can all be psychological reasons for aggressive behavior. Loud noises, other animals, strangers, invasion of space, environmental changes, etc. can trigger the aggressive behavior. However, rest assured, even though your dog may have a reason to act aggressively, it is never okay. The behavior should never be accepted. Dogs are man’s best friend, but they’re also animals, and if you give them an inch they tend to take a mile.
