Branson: Hyperactive Dog Case Study

Hyperactive dogs can be overwhelming. They may pull on the leash, jump on guests, bark, knock things over, and make you want to rip your hair out. Some dogs with these behavior issues are surrendered to a shelter, rehomed, or placed outside because owners don’t realize that there is, in fact, a solution. And that solution is in-home training.

My training program has successfully many hyperactive dogs, including a young dog named Branson, who was exhibiting signs of fear aggression, jumping on visitors, and pulling so hard on the leash the owner could barely manage to take him for a walk. During the in-home consultation, I was able to witness this behavior for myself, as well as see him get so excited he eliminated on the carpet. I could see why his owner was at the end of his rope.

I was able to see that Branson was suffering from anxiety as well as excess energy and needed to be taught boundaries, basic obedience, and also be provided a calm down corner, of sorts. To achieve this, I placed Branson on a structured schedule and also taught his owner how to properly communicate commands to Branson so that he would listen and keep his focus on his owner. Once this focus was achieved, walking Branson became easier because he’d learned exactly what was expected of him, and his owner could trust him to listen and obey. The calm down corner, which I call “place training,” gave Branson a calm place to lay down with the family but without having the chance to become overeager and jump on guests, pee on the floor, or bark at other dogs, which he also had the habit of doing.

This training regimen worked for Branson, and I know that, together, we can design a plan that will work for your dog, whatever the behavioral issue may be. Give me a call today at 800.649.7297 to get started.
